Functions of a modern MES system based on SAP NetWeaver

Work Order List

The core element and the central function of the application is the Work Order List, which replaces the printing of routing cards or the handover of lists to the production department. Each section is therefore able to call off the current work orders for its department or machine. As a result, employees can respond to varying requirement situations with considerably greater flexibility.

Change activity

 

Function "Change activity" can be used to control the assignment of the assembly line by changing the production version. This can be done if different versions have been marked as valid for the material. When working with production orders, a change in work center and therefore transfer to a different machine is possible.

 

Change components

The adaptation of the reservations for each work center can be shown if required. With the standard setup this function is deactivated, but it can be activated for Service or for make-to-order work cells. Replacement assemblies, material status and availability cannot be checked in this version. Of course this function can be modified to suit specific customer requirements on request.

Material provision

The material provision dialogue can be started both for production orders and for planned orders and also for other activities. With the material provision function it is possible to explode both an order-specific bill of materials as well as an anonymous BOM. Shortage quantities in production can be remedied both via transport orders in the warehouse management and by stock transfers in the materials management. There is no need for laborious action involving picking lists or rounding requirements due to pallet sizes. A review of the material availability processing can be specified in detail in the customer project and is included as a project element from the start.

Confirmation

The confirmation dialogue can be started for production and planned orders and other activities. The confirmation function allows the display of the message relating to the production order and that relating to the planned order on a single screen. Contrary to the SAP R/3 standard, all the necessary entries can therefore be made on the same screen. If more than one version of the message is to be possible for one material, the other version(s) can be displayed as well. When the screen is called via the Work Order List, all fields are filled directly and correctly so that only the quantity and - if necessary - the actual time need to be entered.  Any correction of the quantity can be reported directly via the message. Should the production operation not be running smoothly at any point, a corresponding message can also be relayed directly from within the confirmation. It is even possible to state a reason.

Change status

A status concept for both planned and production orders, with which data can be filtered, has been integrated into the solution. In addition, it is possible for information to be exchanged with Production Control. In the area of planned orders a special "Fixing of production" function is provided. This can be used by the line to notify the start of production. Further status data can be added as and when required per customer and special requirement.

Document display

It is possible to go directly from the Work Order List to the document management of the SAP software and to display documents. This means that there is no need for handing over drawings before the start of production and that these are always available in their up-to-date version.

Stock/requirements list

Should the work orders for a work cell be insufficient, a glance at the requirements situation can be very helpful. This function is particularly useful for monitoring material availability. Result: a clear reduction in the communication required where extended workbenches are involved as well as within the company's own production.
